Off-duty police officer fired his weapon at suspected carjacker, SAPD says

Police say they spotted the stolen car and tried to pull over the driver a few times, before an officer fired off a single shot at the car.

SAN ANTONIO — A teenager was taken into custody after police say he stole a vehicle at gunpoint from an off-duty SAPD officer's son and then failed to stop when authorities tried to pull him over.

It began Sunday afternoon along the 6100 block of Pearsall Road, where authorities say that off-duty officer's son "was held up at gunpoint by a suspect" who took off with the car.

Police say that man started searching the area for the car, eventually coming across it at West Military and Whitewood about two miles from where it was stolen.

"Uniformed officers were following the stolen vehicle when the off-duty officer attempted to use his personally owned vehicle to block" the suspect," a police report states.

The off-duty officer got out of his car at this point and, as the suspect drove toward him, police say he fired one shot toward the stolen car. No one was hit.

The suspect fled the area before eventually crashing into a fence a little over a mile away. Officers were then able to detain the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Jimmy Murillo, after a short foot chase.

The off-duty officer's actions are "being investigated both criminally and administratively." SAPD said he is a 10-year veteran with the force and will be placed on administrative duty pending further review, per procedure.
