SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio Independent School District, the city's third-largest district, had the most student sex crime cases reported on its campuses this school year, according to records obtained by the KENS 5 I-Team.
For the recently completed school year, SAISD had 27 criminal cases, compared to Northside ISD's 16 and North East ISD's one.
"We have a lot of vigilant monitoring, and we report what we find," SAISD spokeswoman Leslie Price said, referring to the district's efforts to track down teens engaging in sexual activity on campus.
The arrests ranged from public lewdness to improper photography and one attempted sexual assault.
"It's a number that we want to continue to work to bring down. We want to stop it and address it," said Price.
Sexual harassment-type education is given to SAISD students beginning in the 9th grade, according to Price, who added character training takes place during both elementary and middle school.
According to the records, a third of all SAISD student sex crimes took place on the campuses of Brackenridge High School and Rogers Middle School.
Price pointed out the schools are two of the district's largest campuses.
A Sam Houston High School student served 25 days in jail following a March arrest for public lewdness, according to the Bexar County District Attorney's Office.
"It's certainly not representative of the vast majority of students, but it's still of course concerning," said Price.
She noted an increase in the number of incidents involving students using their phones to record illegal sexual activity, but added the crimes, in general, are a nationwide issue.
SAISD had close to 54,000 students this past school year.
