How much could a DWI cost you? As it turns out, more than a few thousand bucks

DUI arrests are typically at their highest levels between Thanksgiving and the end of New Year's weekend.

If you plan to go out and celebrate on Monday night, make sure you do it responsibly. If not, it could cost you.

According to BacTrack.com, DUI arrests reach their peak between Thanksgiving and the end of New Year’s weekend.

"I've been doing this for 15 years and have seen a lot of DWI cases, especially stemming from the holidays," Shannon Locke, a DWI attorney, told KENS 5 on Monday. "People get arrested when they’ve had too much to drink and then they get behind the wheel."

That decision could cost you some big bucks when you have to consider, at minimum:

  • Legal fees
  • Court fees
  • Jail fees
  • Increased insurance rates
  • Impound lot fees

So what does all that add up to? Locke tells KENS 5 the price of a DWI ranges from $15,000 to $20,000.

"The price can spiral out of control," he said. "It is embarrassing and it is extraordinarily stressful."

There are options to avoid a disastrous mistake. AAA offers Tipsy Tows for those who drove out to a party but can't drive back.

Meanwhile, MadDogs British Pub, On the Bend, BierGarten and The Ticket will offer a $5 off Lyft coupon to their New Year’s Eve partygoers.

"It is a fantastic grouping of people to really make an influence and get to the right people in need of transport assistance on this key night," said Terry Corless, CEO of MadDogs Restaurant Group.
