Family focus at MissionFest ends Fiesta on high note

With Fiesta wrapping up on Sunday, one last event brought people together on the south side.

Trumpets and worship from Mission San Jose parish's mariachi mass opened up a colorful celebration.

One of more than 100 Fiesta events, MissionFest culminated the 11-day-long party by putting family at the center of it all.

“I love seeing all the flowers and all the families,” Sonia Garcia said. “You run into people you don't normally see, friends, families.”

It's a reunion of sorts, some people say. The traditional food, music and sacred grounds provide a feeling Maria Valdivia says she's not able to get at any other Fiesta event.

“It's a beautiful place where you feel peace, comfort and it's filled with the Holy Spirit here,” Valdivia said. “I can feel it.”

It's also her way of reconnecting with loved ones she's lost.

“It's a tradition that I kept ever since my son passed away,” she said. “To come with my grandbaby. I believe so strongly that he is here in spirit, too.”

After more than a week of festivities all across town, southsiders say there's no better way to end Fiesta than to be surrounded by these stunning stone walls and those closest to their hearts.
