S.A. launches 'safest driver' competition with $10K prize

You'll need to download an app on your smartphone to enter the contest, and it will measure driving data like speed, acceleration and braking.

SAN ANTONIO - Do you consider yourself a safe driver? You can prove it by entering a new contest and have a shot at winning $10,000.

The City of San Antonio and USAA announced that the first ever San Antonio’s Safest Driver Contest will run from June 11 to Sept. 3.

The contest is open to residents 18 years and older who drive in San Antonio from Bexar, Comal, Kendall, and Guadalupe counties. Those who are deemed the "safest driver," "least distracted driver," and "safest military driver" can win the cash prizes.

Contestants will need to download an app on their smartphone to enter.

Here's how the contest works, according to a statement from the city:

"The app works in the background of your device as you drive on San Antonio streets and highways, scoring each trip, measuring speed, acceleration, braking, cornering, and phone distraction. The safer you are during your drive, the higher your score, and the better your chances of winning the cash prizes.

The app also provides feedback through driving tips and motivates drivers to drive safer through social leader boards. Cash rewards of $500 will be given every two weeks, and the grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded at the end of the contest.

Those drivers vying for the grand prize must be active in the competition beginning July 9 through the end of the contest. Additionally, just by downloading the app, you are eligible for randomly drawn $150 prizes every two weeks and a grand prize of $2,000."

The contest is also part of the city's Vision Zero initiative.
