Early morning blaze destroys pizza joint

A 2-alarm fire tore through the Pizza Italia restaurant in the 2900 block of Thousand Oaks near Jones Maltsberger early Friday. The flames destroyed the popular eatery.

A 2-alarm fire tore through the Pizza Italia restaurant in the 2900 block of Thousand Oaks near Jones Maltsberger early Friday morning.

The San Antonio Fire Department was called to the scene of the fire around 4:30 a.m. By the time they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof. According to fire investigators, workers from a neighboring bar said they saw fire coming from the rear of the building. When they went to check it out, the fire was on the back door and within minutes it spread.

The flames destroyed the popular restaurant. Fire fighters watched as the roof collasped during their efforts.

The blaze was under contol by around 6:30 a.m. Arson investigators will begin their probe into the cause of the fire later Friday morning. Investigators are suspicious of the fire because of where eyewitnesses saw the intial flames.

Roads in the area were closed for most of the morning.
