Family adopts Labrador rescued from San Antonio railroad tracks

It took less than a week for Lucky – who now goes by Duke – to find his "furever" home.

SAN ANTONIO — The Labrador who was rescued from railroad tracks as a train made its approach through San Antonio last week has now been adopted by a loving family, Animal Care Services (ACS) officials said.

Officials called it a "miracle on the tracks" when ACS Officer David Edwards arrived to an isolated industrial area in response to a 311 call and found Lucky – renamed Duke by his new family – "unable to free himself" when his leash either caught a nail on the tracks or someone secured him there.

Using a human catch pole, ACS said, Edwards was able to gain Duke's trust and guide him off the tracks.

"Before they could make it back to the animal transport vehicle, a train zoomed past," ACS wrote.

Lisa Norwood, an ACS spokesperson, said Lucky "was terrified" after the incident, but within a day went from mistrusting to playful.

In a Facebook update, ACS says they received "an incredible response" from families considering taking the dog in. Duke's new owner said, "As soon as I met him, I could tell he was exactly the kind of dog that would fit in with my family."

Duke officially left with his new owners on Monday, ACS says. But they're still investigating whether someone nailed him down to the tracks. ACS is asking anyone who may have seen something suspicious to call 311.
