Central Texas companies take over best places to work list

Sport Clips, Indeed and Bumble are a few of the best companies to work for, according to Comparably.

AUSTIN — According to a new list of best places to work put together by the career website Comparably, several Central Texas workplaces are a great place to be.

"There's a reason I've been here 25 years, it's a great company to work for,” said Julie Vargas, the vice president of career opportunities at Sport Clips.

Sport Clips was one of two companies to make it into the large company category.

"We love what we do at Sport Clips because of the people we work for,” said Vargas.

Their headquarters is in Georgetown.

Vargas said their success is based on their people, making sure they get recognition.

"People do really just want to be a part of something that they feel they're appreciated, and that they truly ... the work that they do does not go unnoticed,” said Vargas.

She said they also work to make sure employees have opportunities.

"If you're not going to be the manager, what else is there? And at Sport Clips, that's just not the case,” said Vargas.

According to Vargas, the industry has a pretty high turnover rate. But she said a lot of times people return to the company.

"When they do go out there and try those greener grasses, they find out they're not quite as great and our pastures are a lot better taken care of, so they come back,” said Vargas.

At Indeed, a place known for helping others find a dream job, Senior Vice President Paul D'Arcy said they focus on the employee experience.

"We spend a lot of time trying to create a great atmosphere for the people that work at Indeed,” said D’Arcy.

While that includes free food and unlimited vacation time, he said it's more about the purpose of their work: to help others.

"They feel like they're doing powerful work, so that really is a starting point for building a great culture,” said D’Arcy.

And that positive culture is apparent in the growing company.

When D’Arcy started at the company six years ago, they had fewer than 100 employees in Austin. Now they have about 2,000, with 7,000 in total around the world. D’Arcy said they are now building two new campuses for 3,000 employees in Austin.

"We continue to grow at a really fast pace,” said D’Arcy.

But he said they still want to hear from each employee.

"We really do believe in transparency, and we really want this to be an open environment in terms of communication, we want everyone to have a voice, and a say in how we shape this company to be something really special for all of the people that work here today," said D’Arcy.

Over at Bumble, Caitlin Sullivan, the senior manager of people and culture, said they are driven by their mission, vision and values.

"We are ultimately here to end misogyny globally, and the way we do that is starting in our office. We think of how we can reinvent corporate culture to ensure that women and parents and all types of other people can be really successful, and not have to sacrifice their families to grow with the organization,” said Sullivan.

She said that guides the women who run the tech business.

"We make decisions based on whether it's going to further our vision, and not if it's going to make us money,” said Sullivan.

The only company on the list that's not in the Austin area is H-E-B, which is based in San Antonio.
