Baby killed after suspected drunk driver hits shopping cart identified

A 25-year-old man has been booked for intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.

SAN ANTONIO — Officials have identified the one-year-old baby killed when an alleged drunk driver hit a shopping cart in a Dollar General parking lot Monday afternoon.

Police say one-year-old Corinna Tovar died in the accident. In a text, a family member related to the mother said they are simply in shock but grateful of the outpouring of support the family has received.

Police say the man driving a blue Ford Ranger, 25-year-old David Fuentes, pulled into the parking lot on Moursund Blvd. on the city's south side around 1:50 p.m. Police said he was driving at a high rate of speed and took a wide angle as he turned into the parking lot.

A mother had her little girl in the baby seat of a shopping cart and had parked the cart to unload groceries when the Ford Ranger hit the cart. The baby flew out of the shopping cart. The Ranger then struck another vehicle parked near the first vehicle, injuring a woman who was also unloading her groceries.

The baby was transported to the hospital, where she died. The other woman suffered serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital. Police say the mother suffered minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

Fuentes, the driver of the Ranger, was evaluated and found to be intoxicated. He was booked for Intoxication Manslaughter and Intoxication Assault, SAPD said. He is being held on bonds totaling $75,000.

On Tuesday, Esther Martinez started a memorial to remember Corinna and spread a message she said can't be shared enough.

"You are not supposed to be drinking and driving," Martinez said.

She said although she does not know the family, as a mother, she feels their pain.

"I just couldn't go to sleep without knowing that I I could do something for the family, Martinez said. "My condolences really go out to each and everybody of the family."

Within a few hours after Martinez started the memorial, others stopped by and dropped off stuffed animals.

Another family member told KENS 5 the family is beginning to make funeral arrangements.
