SAN ANTONIO — Crews say they pulled several dozen pets from a house on fire on the city's south side but were unable to save the lives of two dogs.

Firefighters arrived at the scene in the 200 block of Betty Jean around 11:40 Wednesday morning, where heavy smoke and flames were visible from a fire that started in the kitchen of the home.

One woman was confirmed as a resident of the house but was not inside at the time of the fire. Several pets were inside at the time of the fire, SAPD said.

Firefighters pulled 20 dogs and several cats from the home. They were able to save 16 of the dogs; two are still receiving care as of Wednesday afternoon, and two died at the scene.

SAFD says that the cause of the fire was not suspicious.
