False rumors of weapons at Brennan High spread on social media

Northside ISD says a post about a student with weapons is creating unnecessary fear.

A situation at a local high school appears to be creating unnecessary fear.

A social media post that went viral claims a Brennan High School student was found this week with a backpack full of weapons.

But it's not true.

Northside ISD leaders told KENS 5 this all began earlier this week after campus administrators at Brennan High School received a complaint about a student.

The complaint was that a student had a weapon.

Northside ISD Police responded, however Northside spokesman Barry Perez said, "No weapon was found on any student, in their possession, on the Brennan High School campus."

The threat was unsubstantiated.

According to a post on the Nextdoor app, someone claimed a student was overheard claiming he was going to shoot up the school and was found with a backpack full of weapons.

"Unfortunately, I think by the use of social media some misinformation got put out and it really has taken on a life of its own," Perez said.

The post spread like wildfire. One comment even had contact information for an officer who allegedly claimed the incident was legit.

"It was never the intent of that officer to say that a weapon had indeed been found on a student. His confirmation was that the campus was investigating an allegation," Perez explained.

A notification was sent out Thursday morning to Brennan parents dispelling the rumor.

Northside ISD leaders want to emphasize that they do not believe there is a threat toward any students at Brennan High School.

They say anyone who has further concerns should contact campus administrators directly.
