Texas colleges extend spring break, move online in response to coronavirus

The moves come as the World Health Organization declares the worldwide coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic.

Trinity University

As concerns grow over the spread of coronavirus, some colleges and universities in Texas are taking extra precautionary measures to keep their students, faculty and staff safe. 

Below is a list of Texas schools that have made adjustments. (For a list of public school cancellations and closures in the San Antonio Metro, click here.)

The University of Texas at Austin

Officials have cancelled classes through March 27, and are considering moving classes online when students return. 

The University of Texas at San Antonio

Spring break is being extended one week, and when classes resume they will be delivered online. Campus will remain open, but officials are encouraging social distancing.

Texas A&M University

The College Station campus is extending spring break through March 20, and plans to resume classes online for the rest of the semester. 

Baylor University

Baylor University has extended spring break to March 20 to take precautions for the coronavirus. After spring break, classes will resume online for the rest of the spring semester. 

Texas State University

Texas State has extended spring break through March 27, and preparing for remote instruction through at least April 12.

Rice University

Rice has moved to virtual learning for the rest of the spring semester. An employee of the university tested positive for COVID-19, according to administrators, but they have now recovered.

Schreiner University

Classes moving to a fully-virtual setting for the rest of the semester beginning March 23, as will the institution's academic services. Meanwhile, students living in residents halls are being asked to move out starting March 20. 

St. Mary's University

St. Mary's is extending spring break through March 20. Classes will resume online for the rest of the spring semester. 

Alamo Colleges District

Spring break will be extended one week, and classes will resume on March 23 through remote teaching.

University of the Incarnate Word

UIW is extending spring break through Friday, March 20 and moving to online instruction for the remainder of the semester. All athletics activities are suspended until at least March 23, and all Southland Conference spring sports are suspended until March 31.

Trinity University

The school announced Wednesday it would extend spring break for its students through March 20, at which point classes will transfer to online learning for the remainder of the semester.

In addition, residence halls will effectively close beginning March 16, with students able to return only to collect belongings and check out of on-campus housing. 

Trinity Athletics is also cancelling all home and away sporting events for the rest of the spring semester, beginning March 23.
