Southside HS students learn from CPS Energy linemen in new program

Southside ISD is launching a new program to show career paths students may not have thought about before.

SAN ANTONIO — Tuesday, Southside High School "Intro to Electricity" students got a hands-on demonstration by CPS Energy on safety techniques for electric work.

For the first time, CPS Energy launched its Students Interested In Technical Education Program, or SITE, at Southside. Students taking electricity coursework learned about how they can apply for paid internships with CPS Energy.

There, they'd get free training and could potentially be offered jobs at the outset.

Southside ISD says this is just one of a variety of programs the district is offering to make sure students know they have options in the areas of college, career and military.

CPS Energy says it loves having the chance to mentor interns.

"Many of them have gone on to full-time careers here at CPS Energy, and they are a valuable contribution to our company each and every day that they’re here," a spokesperson said. "We also love coming out to the schools and educating students on the many career offerings at our company."
