Wednesday we shared information with students and parents about an incident that occurred late Tuesday at Edison High School.

After school on Tuesday, a teacher was informed that a student had been seen with what looked like the butt of a handgun. The teacher contacted school administration, who immediately notified campus police. Officers went to the student’s home and checked his backpack, which had an unloaded handgun, and no ammunition.

It is important to know that we are not aware of any threats having been made and we believe there was no intention to harm anyone. However, it was incredibly foolish for a student to bring a weapon to campus, and there are significant consequences.

The student, an 11th-grader, was arrested and charged with a felony. State and federal law require a student to be expelled from a regular classroom for bringing a firearm to school.

We appreciate the individual who came forward with the information on this incident. It’s important to remind everyone that if you “see something, say something.”
