San Antonio – A dramatic increase in the graduation rate at Sam Houston High School shows that recent community efforts aimed at improving the future of local youths are really paying off.
The percentage of kids who graduated has increased from 46 percent in 2009 to today’s rate of 82.3 percent. Additionally, the dropout rate has decreased from 35 percent to 14 percent over the same period of time.
“Connecting residents to opportunities for prosperity is a top priority for the city,” said Mayor Ivy R. Taylor at a recent senior job training resource and career fair. “Sam Houston High School has given its graduating seniors an educational foundation, and today’s resource fair helped set those students onto their next path.”
The event was hosted by the Office of EastPoint, Alamo Colleges and several workforce training partners.
This year’s annual outreach allowed over 200 graduating seniors, along with their parents, the opportunity to sign up for job training in high demand occupations, college guidance information, and assistance with post high school services.
This effort was aimed at high school seniors who want to jump into the workforce immediately after graduation or seek higher education opportunities.
“Coming out of high school into the real world can be tough, a resource like this is imperative and could make the difference for some kids,” said Councilman Alan E. Warrick II. “This Job Training Resource and Career Fair is a positive step toward a successful future for all the students at Sam Houston High School and is a great opportunity to create a strong and powerful bond between the school and available resources in the community.”
