Salma Boyd wins KENS5 SACU ExCEL Award for Lackland ISD

Some would say Salma Boyd works magic everyday, turning struggling students into honor students.

Some would say Salma Boyd works magic everyday, turning struggling students into honor students.

Her former students returned to Lackland Elementary to talk about the impact she has had on their lives. "Before Ms. Boyd I was an A, B, C kind of student, but after I had her, I had almost all straight A's," said seventh Grader Marquel Morrison.

Boyd is the campus interventionist, math and reading specialist for K- through fifth grade at Lackland Elementary at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. "Having kids come in and out is challenging," said Boyd.

"I was struggling in fourth grade cause I used to live in Utah and then I moved here," said seventh-grader Abigail Fogo.

Students here transfer in and out with their military families. "We find that when students come to Texas, they somehow seem behind even if they were on level where they were. But I find they seem to progress as soon as they get here," said Boyd. "It's so rewarding to serve our nation's heroes. My children are military children, so it's very rewarding to be able to serve them in that capacity."

"She helped me in a lot of subjects like math reading, science, and social studies," said seventh grader John Laryea.

Whatever the subject, her goal for each student is the same. "For them to be their personal best, whatever that might be and for them not to quit until they find it," said Boyd.

"I really like that she made a difference in us. We wouldn't be us without Ms. Boyd," said Laryea

That's a difference that will stay with these students no matter where their families are called to serve.
