'He did a hero's job' | SAPD chief commends officer who shot suspect who opened fire on police

Officers were called to a burglary at a west-side apartment complex. When they arrived, the suspect began shooting at police, according to Chief McManus.

SAN ANTONIO — A suspect is in critical but stable condition after an officer with the San Antonio Police Department shot him at the scene of a burglary on the city's west side.

According to SAPD Chief William McManus, two officers were responding to a call for a burglary in progress at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of Westward Drive. The chief said that when officers arrived at the scene, the suspect immediately opened fire.

"We were extremely lucky today to not have had an officer shot," McManus said. "I don't know how she was not hit."

The suspect's shots struck one officer's car several times, shattering the vehicle's passenger side window and striking the officer's computer. The officer was not hit but did receive some minor injuries. McManus said she was in "OK" condition.

The second officer got out of his car and returned fire, striking the suspect several times. The suspect, a 52-year-old male, was transported to a nearby hospital by EMS, McManus said.

The officer who shot the suspect is four months out of the police academy. McManus commended the officer's actions.

"He did a hero's job neutralizing this guy who could've very well killed a police officer today," McManus said.

It remains unclear what charges the suspect, who was not further identified, could face.
