BCSO: Two bullets killed K-9; both believed to have been fired by suspect

Bexar County authorities say a necropsy was performed on "Chucky," and the final report is still being written.

SAN ANTONIO — As authorities continue to evaluate Friday night’s incident that left a K-9 officer dead and a suspect in the hospital, officials with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office say a necropsy revealed evidence of “two separate bullet wounds” in the dog, Chucky.

BCSO added it’s their belief both bullets were fired by the suspect, 38-year-old Matthew Mireles, who, following a vehicle pursuit through the country, walked on Loop 1604 for at least 20 minutes Friday night before authorities set Chucky loose to subdue him.

Mireles, who could be seen waving around a gun, was eventually apprehended by authorities, but Chucky died from gunshot wounds at the scene.

He was not wearing a vest. BCSO said Saturday the handler didn’t have an opportunity to put one on him. While a necropsy has been performed, the final report is still being written.

“It appears neither of the wounds were from officers,” BCSO said.
