The University of Texas at San Antonio's Pre-freshman Engineering Program (PREP) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are giving kids 18-and-under access to nutritious meals and a college setting during the summer when school is out.
"A lot of kids struggle with not being able to bring their own lunch, so it's very nice to have lunch brought to them," said Leo Castillo, an engineering student at the university and staff member of the program.
During the summer, the middle school-aged students are taking classes that focus on engineering, logic, and problem solving, so by lunch time, they've worked up an appetite.
The hot lunches include a protein, vegetable, fruit, and a choice of milk.
"It's pretty awesome that we don't have to bring all our food every single day, but yet we can have some food here," said Mia Olsen, a student who takes advantage of the free lunch program.
About 80 kids in PREP eat free lunches through the summer lunch program, but they're also available to any child visiting the UTSA downtown campus during the week, whether they're a part of PREP or not.
