Friends remember fallen firefighter with Deem Day challenge

Fallen firefighter Scott Deem's crew and community members remembered him with a "Scotty"-titled Crossfit WOD.

SAN ANTONIO — May 18 marks two years since the loss of San Antonio firefighter Scott Deem, who passed away a hero while fighting a four-alarm fire at an Ingram Park shopping center.

Fellow firefighters and friends remembered him with a Crossfit WOD titled simply: "Scotty."

"Scott was the one that kind of unified the station; everyone was unified and he was the nucleus," said SAFD Captain Martin Selva. "And with his passing I feel as though not only is our station unified, but our department has been unified and the city was unified."

Selva says SAFD still misses Deem, but finds strength in the support of the community.

"I'll never forget the outpouring that the city gave us. It was overwhelming, and I am eternally grateful to the city of San Antonio for the love they showed us," he said. "It's bittersweet. We love him, and we do it because we love him—but it also reminds that we miss him, and that he's gone."
