Community unites to support father who perished in Elmendorf explosion

Roger Noriega was remembered as a "stand-up guy" who "prioritized his family" at a Saturday benefit event.

SAN ANTONIO — The community is responding to the tragic death of Roger Noriega, who perished in a rail car tanker explosion in south Bexar County just over a week ago.

A benefit was held Saturday at Next Day Custom Tees on San Antonio's south side, 10 days after the Elmendorf explosion. Noriega was pulled off life support two days later, after suffering burns to 60% of his body.

Sunday will mark one week since his death.

Family and friends are now focused on raising money to help the 10-year-old son Noriega leaves behind, Roger Noriega, Jr.

"He was all about his family," said Daniela Coffee, a friend of the Noriegas. "He was a very stand-up guy, his family was his priority. And this is why we feel like we need to come in and help."

The goal is to raise $100,000. Aside from the weekend benefit, family and friends have also started a GoFundMe page. If you'd like to donate, you can do so here.
