REPORT: San Antonio Express-News lays off 14 employees

Hearst Corp., which owns the San Antonio Express-News, laid off 14 employees on Thursday as part of a new strategy to consolidate news coverage in Texas.

According to a report from MySA.com, 14 newsroom employees have been laid off by parent company Hearst Corp.

The report states that the layoffs affected writers, editors, and photographers across several departments.

The news comes on the heels of several prominent newspapers throughout the country conducting massive layoffs, cutting down on circulation, or shutting down altogether, in this case despite the fact that Hearst has reported record profits for several consecutive years.

The report also states that during a meeting, Hearst says that they want more coordination among the major Texas newspapers it owns, including the Houston Chronicle plus others in Beaumont, Laredo, and Midland.

The major layoffs also run counter to the fact that census estimates show that San Antonio is growing, meaning media companies catering to the Alamo City presumably have a larger audience to reach.

No word on if any more layoffs are to come as part of Hearst’s transition. But several current and former employees are expressing their disappointment on social media.
