Made in S.A.: The Rusty Flame Candle Co.

One local business is spreading light with sweet scents.

SAN ANTONIO — Things are cooking inside Kiki Lopachin's kitchen, but it's not dinner that's on the stove.

"We eat a lot of Domino's pizza! They deliver a lot out here because the candles kind of take over the kitchen," said Kiki Lopachin. Every day, she melts wax to the perfect temperature, adds a bit of scent, then comes the task of jarring.

"I enjoy it because it's an inner peace, I guess. And certain smells can take me back to a childhood memory," Lopachin said.

One scent that always takes her back is 'Grandma's Candy'.

"That was the first one and it's still today one of our most popular ones. It's one that I burn at every show that we do, and yeah, it's a favorite," Lopachin said.

Lopachin started making the scent about 16 years ago when her first daughter was born.

"I have always been a candle person and always burning them crazy and once I had her, I had always heard how harmful some candles could be. I started looking into a safer way, because I didn't want to give up candles," Lopachin said.

Lopachin's candles are only made with 100 percent soy wax and come in more than a dozen different scents. This working mom hopes the candles do more than just spread a little light.

"It's always a memory for me and that is one of my goals for when people buy my candle, they can make a memory somehow," Lopachin said.
