Made in S.A.: Texas Carpet Baggers

Woman creates artisan leather bags

SAN ANTONIO —  At the Old Village of Bulverde you can find Texas Carpet Baggers, and the "bag lady" herself.

Becky Feely designs, sews and cuts each bag by hand.

"I don't do a lot of the plain brown or plain black because anybody can do that. We do colors and we do embossed," owner, Becky Feely said.

Making bags has become somewhat of a second career for Feely.

"My dad chose my first career which was nursing," Feely said.

After taking some time off, Feely decided in 2010 to get back into the workforce, but instead wanted to make something.

"I thought I needed to run my own company. My mom taught me to sew when I was ten years-old and I started out making Barbie clothes of all things. So I had to figure out something that I could make," Feely said.

Since then she's been designing her leather bags with their signature wooden bottoms and some with a concealed carry pocket.

"I love the challenge of it. It keeps me awake at night. It's the most frustrating but the most rewarding," Feely said.

Even more rewarding is that her clients love her work.

"I wanted to give women that power. If you are going to be carrying it around with them all day long for you to be able to say I helped design in that's kind of fun," Feely said
