Made in S.A.: Bexar Metal Creations

Heated, hammered and hand-made. A request from his wife helps a San Antonio welder- ignite a new career path and find joy in making a point.

SAN ANTONIO — When he lights up his cigar you know Chris Arguello is about to put in some work over an open flame.

"I'll be here 12-14 hours, but it feels like two hours because I enjoy what i'm doing. It's fun," owner, Chris Arguello said.

His idea of fun is heating, molding and beating down metal.

"It's a neat technique because it's like you are molding clay, but you know its at 1,900 degrees and it burns you at every chance it gets," Arguello said.

He shapes the metal into a perfect pointed edge to create a unique blade.

"I enjoy making them and I think that they are really beautiful in the fact that they are so elegant, but you get so much use out of them on a daily basis," Arguello said.

Four years ago Arguello made the move from a life time of welding to forging metal.

"It was just a lot of trial and error. Ruining a lot of steel because I didn't know what I was doing," Arguello said.

But it was his wife's request for a kitchen knife that sparked his business Bexar Metal Creations.

"I pushed myself to learn it. And once I got involved in knives I started to get to know people and picking up things from people," Arguello said.

Learning a little here, a little there he's found a love for this artform

While it comes with a little risk the reward is so much more for this artist and business owner who often finds himself lost in his work.

"It's just so much fun doing what you enjoy," Arguello said.
