Father, son with cerebral palsy are ultimate running team

At the front of the line of the races at the Dulles Plane Pull in Virginia was Mike Harms from Manassas, with his adopted son and running buddy Donald.

“Donald loves racing and he got me into it,” said Harms.

Donald was born with cerebral palsy. Although he is confined to a wheel chair, running is one of his favorite things to do with his dad. Dad loves it, too.

“It just provides us both with a sense of freedom. Me from stresses of life and him from his disability,” said Harms.

Just like it takes determination to get to the finish line, it's taken hard work for Donald to get to where he is today.

For many years, he was non-verbal. It was tough for him to communicate.

“Because he is so determined, he has come to say a lot of words,” said Harms.

On Saturday, the two experienced another accomplishment together.

Father and son crossed the finish line at the airport, proving that with hard work and a positive attitude, you too can fly.

Mike and Donald had an impressive finish at the race. Out of over a thousand runners, they finished 7th overall and 1st place in Michael’s age division.
