It's the reason for the season. Or, in this case, the reason for the freezin'.
The Great Northwest Neighborhood Association, located on San Antonio's west side, hosts the annual event. The 2019 edition was the 29th Polar Bear Swim. Residents of all ages get together to jump in and swim across a pool. The water was 44 degrees - much colder than the temperature outside.
"Some of these people started in 1991," recreation manager Ty Simpson said. "They know they're going to see the same faces every year. And they do."
Swimmers who braved the cold got a free polar bear t-shirt and some hot chocolate. Some believe a plunge into the chilly water helps invigorate and energize your body for the new year.
