Animal lover's rescued dog stolen two days later

A local woman is pleading for a dog she rescued to be returned to her and her husband

D'Ann Trethan loves animals.

She told KENS 5, "I love the possums and the raccoons and skunks and the birds. I love everything. I have always loved animals."

She loves them so much, she feeds about 150 cats in cat colonies, many of which are located along Austin Highway.

"I feed animals every night, and I need food every night. And my husband makes enough money at this little auto body shop to buy the food for me to feed the animals every night," Trethan said.

But they recently came into hard times. Trethan told us, "My husband had been sick over the years, and he had been in the hospital several times."

The bills piled up, and the house the lived in - which housed dozens of cats - was eventually foreclosed on. Now they're living in their car behind an auto body shop, where Friday night a shaggy dog and chihuahua appeared.

Trethan said, "They were very hyper and very sweet, and I could tell they were friends. They bonded."

While Trethan and her husband were trying to secure the dogs, one of them got out. "While we were securing the big fluffy dog with a leash to the fence, the chihuahua dog got out," Trethan told KENS 5.

They were planning to keep the larger dog until Monday, hoping he would lure the other dog back; then they would hand both over to a rescue. On Sunday they went to run errands. She told us, "I was petting the puppy dog and telling the puppy dog we would be right back."

Trethan says when she and her husband got home Sunday night, before they even opened the gate she noticed the dog was gone.

"The puppy dog was tied. My husband had to tie it very good. We had a leash and the puppy dog was tied right here. Someone came and took it. They took my dog and I don't know where my dog is," Trethan said.

Now, she just wants it back, along with the chihuahua if somebody happened to find it. She added, "I'm still concerned I'm worried about my dog. I love that dog, and I want the dog back."

Trethan welcomes donations to help her feed the cat colonies. If you or anyone you know would like to help, contact Jeremy Baker at jbaker@kens5.com.
