Emilio Navaira's sons prepare for special performance with symphony

SAN ANTONIO — The legacy of 'King of Tejano' music Emilio Navaira carries on through his sons. The musicians will honor their late father in a tribute performance with the San Antonio Symphony.

The concert on Thursday at the Tobin Performing Arts Center has been a couple of years in the making. Diego and Emilio Navaira IV said their father wanted to perform with the symphony again before he died.

"For me, Thursday will just be a night to honor my dad through music, which was his biggest passion," Diego said.

Diego will sing, and Emilio will play the guitar. The one-night-only concert will feature several of their dad's biggest hits.

"When we hear these songs with the symphony, it is going to bring new life to them," Diego said. "So even for us, we might look at these songs in a totally different way."

The last time their dad played with the San Antonio Symphony was in the late 90's. Before he died, in 2016, it was his goal to play with them again.

"It is going to be very emotional, I feel, and very special," Emilio said. "And it is his music. And it is the culture of San Antonio, really."

On Thursday night, they will be playing their hearts out, which is a lesson their dad taught them.

"He always told us before we would step on stage, 'play like it is your last, because you never know,'" Emilio said. "He did that until he passed. He was on stage the night before."

The night will be a celebration of life with a few surprises, and they know their dad will be looking down proudly.

"We sometimes can just feel his spirit when we are on stage," Diego said.

The Navaira brothers have been on tour with their group 'The Last Bandoleros'. They now reside in Nashville, where they focus on writing and producing music.
