SAN ANTONIO-High atop of a sprawling piece of real estate in San Antonio is the La Cantera Resort & Spa. Near their infinity pool flows the flavorful food of Primero Cantina.
"Primero Cantina is our two meal restaurant here at the resort," Chef Robert Carr said. "Our focus is fresh quality ingredients using Texas influences."
Carr is the executive chef at the resort. He describes the space at Primero Cantina as relaxed sophistication. It's also a place where anyone can come dine seven days a week without being a registered guest at the resort and spa.
Primero Cantina is one of hundreds of eateries participating in San Antonio's Restaurant Week through January 27.
Neighborhood Eats was provided with a sample of Primero Cantina's dinner menu which is an appetizer, choice of an entree and dessert for $35.
The restaurant threw in their very fresh guacamole and chips for our taste test. Neighborhood Eats started with the shrimp flautas: Chopped shrimp, cilantro, cojita cheese served with a special vinegar sauce that has a zing of tequila. ¡Que Rico!
Both dinner entrees were provided to sample starting with the chicken adobo. It's a whole semi-boneless chicken, marinated and pan seared with garlic and soy sauce then finished off with adobo butter over rice. ¡Que Rico!
The lamb pastor is an 'El pastor' inspired braised lamb shank served with a butternut squash and white bean Mexican cassoulet. Delicious!
There's a funnel cloud of flavor in their funnel cake. This is not your average funnel cake by any stretch. It comes with spiced pecan praline, strawberries and cajeta. ¡Que Rico!
Primero Cantina is also doing lunch for restaurant week. For $15 the entree choices are Milanese Cemita or crab tacos. And, yes funnel cake for dessert.
