Meet the KENS 5 Team: Jon Coker

Audience Engagement Specialist

Jon Coker is an Emmy-nominated producer and the audience engagement specialist for KENS 5, San Antonio’s CBS affiliate.

He was born in Germany on a U.S. Air Force base and says he was “raised on an airplane” in a military family. Experiencing different cultures and countries around the world at such a young age contributed to his fascination with people and their stories. Since his early childhood, Jon has been a multi-tasker, managing several projects at once.

After graduating from Samuel Clemens High School, he accepted a position with KENS 5 as a production assistant. The following year, he signed on as an entertainer for Spurs Sports & Entertainment and spent four years sandwiching his full-time college education between early mornings at KENS 5 Studios and late nights performing for the San Antonio Spurs as one of the first members of TEAM ENERGY.

He worked as an award-winning reporter and cartoonist for The Ranger newspaper during his time at San Antonio College, where he received an associate’s degree in Radio, Television, and Film Production. He transferred to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where he received his bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies. In 2017, he received his DVULI leadership certification and committed his training to developing leaders and inspiring innovation in companies and organizations nationwide. His career trajectory in television accelerated in 2018 when he became a reporter and the following year accepted a promotion to his current position as audience engagement specialist, through which he contributes to the station’s content, creative and community efforts.

Apart from his TV work, Coker and his wife, Jaymee, direct student ministry initiatives for their church, lead several business ventures, and develop character education programs for schools across the country through their nonprofit organization, Creative Hearts Entertainment. Their daughters, Amor and Amaris, are the inspirations behind Coker’s first published children’s book, “Big Little Words in Mari’s Big Little World,” and their family outreach, A Little Amor: Books & Stuff.

Coker serves as a board member for the Harvey E. Najim Charitable Foundation, which provides millions of dollars each year in grants to organizations serving youth in the greater San Antonio area. He has served as a creative producer for conferences and leadership summits producing content for global audiences with industry leaders such as actors Denzel Washington and Boris Kodjoe, author and speaker TD Jakes, and the president of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Today, he credits God for his successes and uses his platform to inspire the next generation to be the good news.
