The National Multiple Sclerosis Society: Lone Star, in partnership with the San Antonio Museum of Art and the students of Brackenridge High School, unveiled the Art ‘N Sole exhibit at the new SAMA restaurant, Café des Artistes with Chef Damien Watel, on Tuesday, March 2; the exhibit will remain on display at the cafe from March 2 – 16. Art ‘N Sole features 35 pairs of art shoes that celebrate the 3,500 walkers expected to participate in Walk MS: San Antonio 2010, presented by H-E-B, on March 6 at the AT&T Center.
The San Antonio Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibit – Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s – provides the inspiration behind the design of the shoes, which are painted in the ‘psychedelic style’ under the direction of local artist and educator Kim Bishop. Prior to beginning the project, the students were educated on the effects of multiple sclerosis (MS), its impact on those living with the disease, and the Society’s efforts to drive research, programs and services in support of the 20,000 people with MS in 174 Texas counties.
The transformed shoes will serve as a powerful artistic symbol of the steps San Antonians will take at Walk MS: San Antonio, as they make a vivid mark in the movement to achieve a world free of MS. Just as art moves us, thousands of walkers move us by challenging themselves and others to raise $310,000 for MS research and programs.
