Sudden hail storm covers Del Rio in blanket of ice

Video update: Crews working to restore power in Del Rio

Residents in Del Rio might have been caught off guard around 10 Monday night when a sudden hail storm blasted into the area.

Along with damaging high winds, the hail storm covered much of the town in a blanket of ice.

Thousands of residents were left without power following the hit, and crews were continuing to try to restore power to the city Tuesday morning at 6:30.

"This is not common for Del Rio," said Del Rio resident Eric Cavanagh, "so, for us to see something like this is kind of significant."

Along with the power outages and major amounts of damage to property, school closures were reported around the area. San Felipe Del Rio CISD was reportedly closed due to the storm, and Brackett ISD about 30 minutes east was also closed.

"You never underestimate the power of mother nature and what she's capable of doing," Said Cavanagh.

Numerous residents submitted these photos of the damage and hail to KENS 5:
