LA VERNIA-- Residents in La Vernia gathered to share information on plans to turn a 19-year-old disposal well into a dump site for fracking waste.

Geomeg Energy has applied for a permit through the Railroad Commission.

Jimmy Stevens has spent his entire life in La Vernia, he's worried about groundwater contamination from fracking and possible leakage when waste is stored in disposal wells.

"Once it's in the ground, we don't know where it's going to end up, where it's going to be stored, we have no indication of that," Stevens said. "This is not disposal, this is storage, this doesn't go away. Once it's put in there it stays there forever."

The disposal well is along FM 539 in southeast La Vernia. Residents fear a leak could threaten Cibolo Creek and the Carrizo-Wilcox aquifer.

Two hearings with the Railroad Commission have been postponed. The latest hearing is set for September 6.
