Amadeo Ortiz easily defeated Andy Lopez for the Democratic Party's nomination for Bexar County sheriff.
Ortiz came out guns blazing in the Tuesday primary runoff.
Early returns gave the sheriff a two-to-one margin over his contender - and the lead held all night.
Ortiz was all smiles at his watch party held at the Stockyards Saloon on San Antonio's west side.
He thanked his supporters for turning out at the polls time and time again.
"Especially this time around when we had the redistricting, and we had the primaries, we had the city bond elections. People were getting tired of coming out to vote," said Ortiz. "So we knew that the problem would be trying to get them out. So, I was surprised by the total number of people that came out to vote."
In the November election, Ortiz faces Republican Susan Pamerleau, who is a retired two-star Air Force general.
