JERUSALEM -- Israeli chefs chopped and cooked Monday in an effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest "Jerusalem Mixed Grill."
The meat mixture, served on pita bread, includes chicken hearts, livers, spleen and bits of lamb grilled with onion, garlic and an array of Middle Eastern spices.
Chefs from across Jerusalem gathered in an open-air market to work on their project in public.
"All the chefs from Jerusalem, from all the hotels and the restaurants around this city, come here to Mahane Yehuda's market to make the Jerusalem mixture in the big pita in the world today," Tali Friedman, a chef who works at a restaurant in the market, said.
According to the event's organizers, 10 kilos (22 pounds) of flour were used to make the two meter long pita bread that was the base for the mixed grill. The grilled meat weighed in at 32 kilograms (70.5 pounds) and the salad at 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds), they said.
Organizers said a lawyer from the Guinness Book of World Records documented the size and weight of the cuisine created.
Organizers also said the project was also part of a series of events to promote tourism in Jerusalem.
