SAN ANTONIO - Drivers beware. If you plan on using I- 35 this weekend in San Antonio, go ahead and make alternate plans.
Beginning Friday at 9 p.m., the Texas Department of Transportation plans to shut down the highway in both directions between Rittiman and George Beach, which will affect anyone going to San Antonio Military Medical Center.
I-35 will be shut down in both directions until Monday morning while TxDOT crews demolish a bridge that connects 35 to Loop 410.
It's part of ongoing construction and backed-up traffic that, drivers like Sid Wilkirson say, never seems to end.
"I always anticipate I'm going to get it. It's a given," Wilkirson lamented.
TxDOT says drivers should expect major delays this weekend as access roads become the primary roads.
The exception comes Saturday between 6 and 11 p.m., when the highway will re-open to accommodate Spurs traffic.
For those who have to travel I-35, to go south you will exitat George Beach and re-enter the highway at the next available ramp.
If you're heading north on I-35, you will have to exit Loop 410, turn around at Binz-Engleman, then continue along northbound 410 to return to northbound I-35.
"If it helps to improve the traffic flow, I'm all for it,” Wilkirson said. “I don't mind being inconvenienced for a little bit. I don't intend to drive it over the weekend anyway.”
