SANANTONIO - A 61-year-old man watched from a San Antonio courtroom Thursday as prosecutors showed video of him confessing to killing his wife.

John Benzing is on trial for the 2009 murder of his 79-year-old wife, Leona Benzing.

After 27-years of marriage, prosecutors said Benzing had had enough.

Ina taped interview with a San Antonio police detective from two years ago, Benzing said he hit his wife in the head with a hammer at least five or six times and then stabbed her with a knife.

Benzing told the detective in the video, his wife abused him.

Leona Benzing suffered from schizophrenia and was a cat hoarder, according to investigators. She had more than 50 cats, which in the 2009 interview Benzing complained about. He said the smell ofthe catsupset him.

Jurors also watched as Benzing told the detective on the video about their financial problems and years of mental and physical abuse from his wife.

After being arrested in 2009, Benzing told a KENS 5 reporter it was temporary insanity , and he just flipped-out.

It s unclear at this point what Benzing s defense will be. The trial resumes Friday morning.
