SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-wheeler exploded into flames following an accident with a wrong-way driver on Saturday morning.

The northbound lanes of I-35 were closed for hours between Eisenhauer and Walzem roads as fire crews doused the blaze and cleared the wreckage.

San Antonio police said the accident was caused by a driver traveling south in the northbound lanes around 3:30 a.m.

The collision caused the truck to begin leaking gas, which was followed by several explosions.

Officers said the truck driver was able to escape before the truck burst into flames.

The wrong-way driver was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with serious injuries but is expected to survive.
