SAN ANTONIO -- The city of San Antonio is purchasing new cars and new guns for the San Antonio Police Department.

SAPDwill begin replacing officers' Ford Crown Victorias with new Ford Explorers early next year.

Officers are also receiving new sidearms and holsters. For years, they've been carrying a .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol. Many officers, however, found the grips cumbersome. The police department is switching over to the Smith & Wesson version of the handgun.

They can buy the Glock if they want, said Chief William McManus. There's also a holster that will fit the Smith & Wesson that (the company) has offered in the deal.

Officers will need to get certified with their new sidearm. They'll begin training for qualification in 2013.
