SAN ANTONIO -- A school bus driver in Universal City fatally struck a young student on her way to school Tuesday morning and didn't realize what happened until hours later.

Steve Linscomb with the Judson Independent School District said 6-year-old Jada Craft was hit by the bus in front of her apartment complex's leasing office, in the 11800 block of E. Loop 1604, in northeast Bexar County.

Craft died as a result of her injuries.

Universal City police said the child may have been running late and trying to catch the bus when she was struck, presumably as the bus was taking off around 6:30 a.m.

A male relative who was with the girl tried to get help from passing drivers, but ended up taking the victim back to her home, at the Avana Grove apartment complex, where she later died, according to UCPD.

The bus driver -- reportedly unaware of what occurred -- continued on her route. Police said the driver had even left home for the day and had to be called back to work. That's when, police say, she learned about the accident.

It's a huge loss, said Linscomb. You do everything you can to keep things as safe as you can, put preventative measures in and something like this happens.

Authorities said Craft was a first-grade student at Coronado Village Elementary School. She was hit approximately half a mile away from the campus.

Linscomb said counselors would be at the elementary school to help the community deal with the loss.

Investigators are expected to review the bus' surveillance cameras to try and piece together exactly what happened. At least 15 students were on board the bus at the time of the incident, police said.

KENS 5's Marvin Hurst said no school bus was at the scene of the accident by the time he arrived.

No charges are expected against the bus driver, who was questioned and released by police by 9:30 a.m., according to UCPD.

Judson ISD released the following statement:

Coronado Village ES Student Tragically Dies in Bus Mishap

It is with great sadness that Judson ISD reports today the tragic death of one of its young students. A 6-year old kindergarten student from Coronado Village Elementary School tragically died early this morning around 6:30 after she was run over by one of the district's school buses. While the investigation is still ongoing, the tragedy appears to have happened while she was trying to catch the bus at her apartment complex near Kitty Hawk and Loop 1604. No charges are pending at this time as the bus driver was not aware that the incident had occurred. This incident is being investigated by Universal City Police and family members are still being notified at this time. The name of the student will be released by U.C. Police at the appropriate time. A team of counselors have been dispatched to the campus to assist students and staff in dealing with this tragedy.
Our sympathy and prayers go out to the student s family as well as those students and staff who were close to her.
We ask all members of the news media to be sensitive to school staff and parents as the campus deals with the loss of this student. If you have any questions, please direct them to the Judson ISD Public Information Office.
