SAN ANTONIO -- Two people are dead and another is seriously injured after a train crashed into a vehicle on the city's southwest side.

Investigators did not immediately know the make or model of the vehicle because it was so mangled.

San Antonio police said it ended up on the tracks near Cupples and Quintana roads after the southbound driver slammed into a median and launched off the overpass around 1 a.m. Monday.

A witness tried to flag down the northbound train, officers said, but the train was unable to stop.

San Antonio firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract two passengers and the driver from the vehicle.

Police said a man and a woman, both in their late-20s, were killed in the crash. Their names were not immediately available.

The driver was taken to University Hospital in stable condition.

Police said there was some confusion about a possible fourth passenger. Crews searched the area with the help of the Blue Eagle helicopter but did not find anybody.

Investigators said the driver was probably going as fast as 100 mph before the crash.
