Midland police have confirmed the identities of the four victims of a fatal train crash that took place Thursday afternoon at a veterans parade.

They said 34-year-old Army Sgt. Joshua Michael of Converse, 37-year-old Army SGM Gary Stouffer, 47-year-old Army SGM Lawrence Boivin and 43 year old Army SGM William Lubbers have died as a result of the accident.

The parade was held before a special hunting trip for wounded veterans.

Witnesses, family members and close friends said Michael pushed his wife and others out of the way of the train just before it hit the float.

Michael had received two Purple Hearts for his tours in Iraq. He is survived by his wife, Daylyn, and the couple's two children.

Sixteen other people were injured when a trailer was hit by an oncoming Union Pacific train.

The trailer was parading wounded veterans through the town.

Six people are in the hospital; one is in critical condition.

A spokesperson for Union Pacific said the train was sounding its horn before it hit the float. They said the crossing gate and lights were working.

The investigation continues.

A fundraising website has been set up for the Michael family.
