The cover photo on the next issue of Time Magazine features a mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old son -- an image that has been posted, shared and re-tweeted all morning.

Time explained the photograph of Los Angeles mom Jamie Lynne Grumet in a preview about the cover story on attachment parenting.

Time describes the pillars of attachment parenting as:

  • extended breast-feeding
  • co-sleeping
  • baby wearing - physically attaching children to parents with slings

The photographer who took the picture reportedly used images of the Madonna and Child as inspiration.

The picture exploded on social media platforms Thursday, generating both positive and negative comments. A reaction from actress Alyssa Milano fueled a slew of re-tweets.

.@Time, no! You missed the mark! You're supposed to be making it easier for breastfeeding moms. Your cover is exploitive & extreme. Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) May 10, 2012

Grumet is the author of a parenting blog, I Am Not the Babysitter. She has also posted reactions to the photo on her Twitter account.

Oh my gosh! Aram and I are on the cover of @timemagazine iamnotthebabysitter (@MsJamieLynne) May 10, 2012

@MsJamieLynne @timemagazine Just saw this! Good for you and good for TIME. Very bold! Robinne Lee (@robinnelee) May 10, 2012
