The U.S.'s first national monument to a soldier's best friend was revealed in San Antonio Monday.

The words Guardians of America's Freedom are inscribed above the nine-foot tall bronze statue at Lackland Air Force Base.

The memorial recognizes the sacrifices of dogs in combat.

The sculpture features the four major breeds used since World War Two: the Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and the Belgian Malinois.
