SAN ANTONIO --The Catholic Church is celebrating the canonization of two new saints, one of whom visited the Alamo city in 1987.

Popes John Paul II and John XXII are now saints and the former made a very special connection with San Antonio and its Catholic worshipers.

San Antonio is named for a Saint but now the city can boast that it's also hosted one.

John Paul II visited the city in September of 1987. He left with memories, but the connection he made with people here is, to this day, visibly profound.

He was able to reach out to many, Gustavo Garcia-Siller, San Antonio Archbishop, said.

The parishoners of Holy Spirit Catholic Church are connected by their faith.

Most of the Catholics who are alive today knew John Paul II, Archbishop Garcia-Siller said.

Those same Catholics are connecting through prayer to celebrate the canonization of John Paul II and John XXIII.

One of the many who packed the pews and aisles on Sunday, Rita Wisniewski, has her own connection with one of the church's newest saints.

Somebody I've met, I've known, obviously I'm also Polish so I do have that added pride Rita Wisniewski, Holy Spirit Catholic Church Parishoner, said.

Rita met the pope on his trip to the Alamo city in 1987.

To know that I knew him, I saw him, I was close to him, now he's a saint, that's really special, Wisniewskisaid.

San Antonio was the first settlement of Polish people in the United States, so he was very connected with that, Archbishop Garcia-Siller said.

Gustavo Garcia-Siller had a connection with the Pope when he visited Mexico, he says he should've helped usher in guests at a chuch, but left that post to hug the Pontiff.

As he came in, well I forgot that and I just embraced him and so I remembered that embrace, Wisniewskisaid.

A rosary, with its connected beads, has come to symbolize prayer and faith in Catholicism. It's that faith that made San Antonio and a saint forever connected.

I think he especially loved being here and he showed that to all of us and it's something that will always be in the history of San Antonio, Wisniewski said.

Sunday's canonization of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII are the first of two popes in the history of the Catholic Church.
