Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on the northwest side early Tuesday evening.

Bexar County deputies were at the scene in the 1100 block of Dublin Place near Shaenfield Road in response to a reported officer-in-distress call.

Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said Tuesday at around 6 p.m. five deputies approached the home. They were there to arrest 38-year-old Juan Daniel Gonzales Jr.

Pamerleau said Gonzales has seven felony warrants for felony theft, retaliation and failure to register as a sex offender. She said it was a tip that led them to the cul-de-sac where the house is located.

The owner of the home and a woman refused to help the deputies, the sheriff said.

When the deputies searched the home, Gonzales, who was apparently hiding in the laundry room, surprised one of the deputies, and shots were fired.

The sheriff said 49-year-old Deputy Jose Esquivel was shot twice. Pamerleau said he was alert when the emergency responders took him to an area hospital by ambulance. She said Esquivel has been with the Sheriff's Office for 28 years.

According to the DPS registry, Gonzales was on parole after serving a 6-year sentence for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old boy.

Gonzales was not injured, but he was arrested, as were the homeowner and the woman who refused to help authorities.
