SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Office of Emergency Management tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that San Antonio had become the state activation site due to the string of tornadoes affecting the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Emergency management officials from around the state were already in San Antonio for the 2012 Texas Emergency Management Conference being hosted at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Officials from the Dallas-Fort Worth area weren't able to return to their home bases due to the severe weather, but mobilized remotely from San Antonio.

They were here attending the conference so their representatives are sitting down working in their chairs just like they're in their local operation centers, said Nim Kidd, Director of Emergency Management for Texas. Local emergency managers now have hard line telephone lines back to their offices.

At this afternoon's press conference, Kidd said that within eight minutes their servers were all pointed in the same direction.

The fact that we were able to exercise the technology and training that we're getting here for a real event - I don't know how we could have had a faster response time, Kidd said.
