SANANTONIO -- Bexar County sheriff's deputies say a fugitive inmate is back behind bars after the jail mistakenlyset him free last week.

Vincent Barnett, 25, was sentenced to five years on drug charges. But on Thursday, he was released from the downtown jail, and enjoyed several days of freedom until he deputies arrested him again on Saturday.

The sheriff's office is blaming the error on a paperwork technicality and failed communication between the district clerk s office and the jail.

Deputy Chief Dale Bennett said the sheriff s office is working to make sure it doesn t happen again.

As a matter of fact we are going to be meeting with the district clerk's office and the county clerk to remedy the problem to keep it from coming back, Bennett said.

However, County Commissioner Kevin Wolff said Thursday s mistaken release points to bigger problems.

At the end of the day the person elected to manage the jail is responsible, Wolff said, referring to Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz. Letting someone out of jail mistakenly is a management function.

In 2009, Reginald Adams, sentenced to 12 years in jail, was also mistakenly released from the Bexar County Jail.

The sheriff's office also cited communication issues and human error as the reasons for the release.

The sheriff's office said it will continue to further examine what steps can be taken to prevent this from happening again.

Steps, some say, should have been taken the first time.
