SANANTONIO -- San Antonio s health care industry continues to grow and expand. Today, a major employer announced a new global headquarters in the Alamo City.

Kinetic Concepts, Inc. (KCI) is a world leader in wound care, tissue regeneration and hospital mattresses. The company that sprouted in San Antonio 35 years ago is building a new headquarters on the city's northwest side, at I-10 and Hausman.

Koontz-McCombs Construction is the designer and builder of the 100,000 square foot facility.

So it s complete economic development all around which is music to the ears of any mayor these days in the United States, commented San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro.

KCI employs 2,000 local workers and 7,000 around the globe. Kinetic Concepts president said it was a natural choice and a good economic decision to build their new headquarters here.

San Antonio has been pretty robust through the whole economic recession situation, said Cathy Burzik, president and CEO of KCI. It s been important that we could recruit people here, both from the local community and from other cities to come here, and we ve done very well in attracting people here to San Antonio.

The founder of the company, former emergency room physician Dr. Jim Leininger said he s proud to plant deep roots in a community that helped support his company through some rough times.

That family spirit transcended all the troubles we were having and somehow, by God s grace, we made it, Leininger stated.

KCI sells its products in 20 countries now and plans to expand its market, especially in Asia and South America.

It is truly a time of momentum for our city, Castro added.

The new KCI headquarters is expected to be open for business in the summer of 2012.
